Win the Case and Still Foot the Bill

That the US House of Representatives could even think that it might be a good idea to prevent civil rights groups like the ACLU from recovering expenses when they win a First Amendment case is completely mindboggling to me. Protecting the separation of church and state shouldn’t be a bankrupting enterprise, when the plaintiff is found to be in the right. Can you say “chilling effect,” boys and girls?

No, it’s not really expected to get past the Senate, but still. Ghastly.

Here’s the story in yesterday’s Washington Post. Link via Religious Right Watch.

Oldest Writing in the Western Hemisphere Discovered

My husband and I heard about this on the radio on Friday morning, from Isaac-Davy Aronson, who was guest-hosting for Rachel Maddow on her show’s last morning-timeslot broadcast (she’s moving to evenings starting Monday). And, quite frankly, I think Aronson was decidedly condescending to those of us who find such things exciting. But despite the messenger’s annoying attitute, I found myself thrilled by the news. It’s not often a previously unknown writing system is discovered, after all.

Here’s the story from Kambiz Kamrani at Anthropology.net.

At Least We Know It’s Not the Starter

A short while ago, I tried to start my ‘71 superbeetle (Baby*, as I call her) and she just wouldn’t. Not even a grind as she tried to catch, just a sad little click as the key turned in the lock.

Today, my husband jumped Baby from his Honda Civic. It took some doing, but he got her going (yay!). We ran her for a bit, but she wouldn’t start again without the jump. I’m thinking a new battery is in order here, but it might also turn out to be the generator. We’re going to try the battery option first. ‘Cause, she probably would have needed one soon anyway.

* Those of you who’ve read the Wild Cards series edited by George R.R. Martin know where the name came from.

Not What Happened

Sunday and Monday nights, ABC will be running a miniseries, The Path to 9/11, which is apparently full of wholesale lies. Former counterterrorism czar Richard Clarke has said that at least one key scene in the production — the one in which troops are close enough to take down Bin Laden but don’t because the Clinton administration pulls the plug on them — never happened at all. They never had that chance, so the plug could never have been pulled.

There’s more to read on the subject at Think Progress.

Harlan Ellison, Embarrassment

Harlan Ellison touched Connie Willis’s breast onstage at the Hugo Awards last weekend. The video clip is here.

The SF community has had a love/hate relationship with Harlan Ellison for the entire length of his career. He’s always been loud, rude, childish, argumentative, and disrespectful. He’s the iconic brat of the literary world. But sometimes he pushes it too far. And this time, he’s pushed it clean off the edge.

It’s really too bad that Harlan is such a moron, because he really is an amazing writer. A genius, in fact. Which, I think, is one of the reasons people have put up with his brattiness all these years. We’ve let him get away with things that ordinary mortals would be tarred and feathered for, because, well, he’s Harlan. The normal rules of society have never applied to him.

You know why? Because we — the SF community, the fen, and society in general — have never enforced them. Because we have laughed at his cruel jokes. Because we’ve found his vindictive pranks against those who’ve offended him funny. Because we’ve allowed him to do all the things that we could never get away with. We made him the icon he became. Not despite his antisocial behavior, but because of it.

Shame on us for that.

And shame on me, too. Because despite how angry I am at him right now, I still want to like the little troll. And sooner or later, against my own better judgment, against my own principals, I know I’ll forgive him. Sort of. Because, well, he’s Harlan.

Dissent in America

Keith Olbermann was stunningly eloquent on the subject of Donald Rumsfeld earlier this week. For those of you who missed it on TV, you can see it here. It is a beautiful, beautiful thing.
