I’m a few chapters into Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows now, and what everyone who’s already read it has told me is pretty true. Intense. Right from the start. Important stuff going on already. Upsetting stuff.
And I’m not reading quickly enough to please my husband, who has already read it and can’t stand that [...]

I just finished reading Elizabeth Bear’s Blood and Iron.
It’s been a while since I’ve read a book where I could identify with and sympathise with every POV character. And most of the major secondary characters. And the couple that I couldn’t get into the skins of? I at least understood where they were coming from. [...]

I have been acquisitive these last few days, which is always fun.
On the road during our little mini-vaca last weekend, Andy and I stopped at the Traveler Restaurant in Union, CT. A favorite place en route from here to his folks’ in the lower Hudson Valley, not only because the food is hearty and [...]

Elizabeth Bear is on a writers’ retreat. It seemed to have started off pretty well, but if you follow the entries along…

This book would make a very cool Masterpiece Theatre drama. It has all the stuff their audience eats up: inheritance swindles, questions of honor, pushy mothers, unfair class distinctions, social ambition, and orphaned daughters with dowry problems.
I don’t think MP will go for the fact that all the characters are dragons, though.
It’s a very, [...]

For the record, I’m a vampire lover. I read vampire books. I write vampire stories. I watch vampire movies. I think the orginal Dark Shadows is still the best soap opera ever made, at least after they introduced Barnabas Collins.
But Patricia Briggs has created a world where werewolves are infinitely sexier than vampires. Even when [...]

Cross-genre or sub-genre? Either way, I love it. You can’t go wrong with a Civil War naval romp if you add a heaping side of magic and characters that you can identify with. Extra points if one of the authors is a long-time Navy vet who knows from ships.
Agree with me? Read Land of Mist [...]

Outgoing SFWA VP Howard Hendrix calls writers who put their work up on the internet for free “webscabs.” Obviously, the man doesn’t know what a scab really is. But then, I’m guessing he doesn’t have to deal with a whole lot of labor relations problems up there in his scenic mountain home in the Sierra [...]
