What Were They Thinking?

The tanning salon that I pass on my way to and from the train station every day is apparently under new management. It has been renamed “Solar Eclipse Tanning.” I kid you not.

Um, guys? Not going to get much of a tan if the moon’s in the way.

What Friends Are For

Friends are for having things that you would love to have, but that you have the good sense not to. Like video gaming systems that you know would suck all the time out of your life. Andy and I visited friends like this over the weekend. Kate and George have X-Box 360. They have Guitar Hero II.

I can now almost play Cheap Trick’s Surrender on Easy level. Kate, on the other hand, is working on Trogdor.

Dear God, Somebody Help Them

Elizabeth Bear is on a writers’ retreat. It seemed to have started off pretty well, but if you follow the entries along

Well, I think there’s something seriously wrong in North Carolina, and I think it may have taken out a good number of talented writers. At least a couple of whom I like as people as well.

Or Bear could be playing with us. Maybe.

Because Thirty Years Out, It’s Still a Great Movie

The original Star Wars came out the summer I turned 12. Impressionable young geekling that I was, having been raised on Star Trek and JRR Tolkien, I was mightily smitten by the Force. It was the first movie I ever begged my parents to take me to over and over again. After we got cable TV a few years later (I was in high school), I watched Star Wars over thirty times in one month on The Movie Channel.

Yes, I know how sad that sounds. All I can say is that it was on very high rotation, it was summer, and I was a geek. This was back when geeks weren’t cool. Especially girl geeks.

Anywho… That movie came out 30 years ago this weekend. And it still rocks. (The original version. We will not speak of the tweaked up, Greedo shot first bastardization George made out of it later, will we?)

So here are some bunnies reenacting it.

Cuddly Heroes

Just look at these Candybar Dollmaker dolls of the Hereos cast! Mohinder Suresh is especially well-done — or is that just that Sendhil Ramamurthy’s face is particularly well-suited to the doll style?

Name Geekery

I love weird, random resources. I love learning about obscure stuff that most people don’t care about, like the fact the the Polish girl’s name “Halina” is derived from the Russian/Bulgarian name “Galina” which is a feminine version of “Galenus.” You know, as in Galen, the famous 2nd century physician?

I got that from Behind the Name.

They also have a random name generator, which you can restrict by ethnicity or choose from such categories as “Goth” or “Fairy” or even (if you’re feeling really really silly) “Transformer.”

Abused Cuddly Toys

Yes, it’s true. Every day, cuddly toys are abused by those who should love and care for them. They are left psychologically damaged by these atrocities, and they need your help.
