The Gitmo Suicides

Posted By Ardellis on June 13, 2006

It’s outrageous that anyone working for the US government would say that the suicides at Gitmo this past weekend were “a p.r. move”, but what I find really shocking is that anyone is actually surprised that it’s been said. Maybe I’m just getting too cynical about all of this, but since when do we expect the cogs in the torture machine to think of anyone else as human?

I think these men committed suicide for no other reason than that they fully expected to spend the rest of their lives in that cesspit. Put in their place, I can’t say I wouldn’t do the same.

  1. “cogs in the tourture machine”? That’s a nice thing to say about your countrymen. If I didn’t know any better, I’d guess you’re with the enemy.

  2. So, Americans are exempt from criticism, no matter what they do, even when they ignore the basic ideals upon which their country is based? If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were a troll.

  3. You think that is criticism? What proof do you have of torture? John Kerry’s word? An article from the NY Times? Al Franken’s radio show? Did you witness this torture while being held at Gitmo? There is a difference between criticism and baseless accusation. If I’m a troll for giving our troops the benifit of the doubt, then a troll I shall be.

  4. 1. Colleen Graffy is not one of our troops. She’s deputy secretary of state.

    2. Your list of possible sources is pretty broad. Do you discount all of them? Because if you do, then no one on Earth could convince you of anything.

    3. I get my information from a lot of places. US and international news sources and Amnesty International among them. Here’s a link to a story about a report issued by the Pentagon that found that there has indeed been “mistreatment” of detainees in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Gitmo: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/world/3977711.html
Whatever their excuse for it, even the Pentagon admits that we’ve been torturing people.

    4. Number one definition of the word “criticize” from the American Heritage Dictionary: to find fault with. There’s no burden of proof inherent in the term. It’s as easily opinion as fact. And my opinion is that there’s a distinct lack of humanity in the Bush administration.

    5. You can argue with me all you want about the issues and the facts and our divergent opinions, but when you sling unfounded personal insults at me like “If I didn’t know any better, I’d guess you’re with the enemy.” you take on a distinct air of having lived too long under a bridge.

  5. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you’re with the enemy.”

OK so this has been poking me with a sharp stick. HOW does troll know better and you’re not with the enemy? Is there a personal connection between the two of you? It’s easy to misrepresent yourself on the internet. I mean maybe you ARE a terrorist posing. Maybe troll is an eighty year old grandmother looking for terrorists from her home computer. Maybe I’m a Harvard educated, Las Vegas showgirl.

    Just saying…

Gotta love the internet, don’t you?

I think this person has been reading my blog for awhile. I got a few comments back before I had to change blog apps from a “cjfin00.” I suspect this is the same person. S/he and I do have divergent opinions, but s/he’s never actually aimed a personal insult at me before this.

  7. I’ve always suspected Randy was Las Vegas showgirl with a degree from Harvard.

(Because she’s very tall expert in a specialized field who likes sequins, that’s why.)
