Peter Watts Sentenced

Dr. Peter Watts, recently convicted, basically, of the felony crime of not cowering quickly enough when the US Border Patrol decided to search his car as he was leaving this country a few months back, has been sentenced, and I’m glad to see the judge didn’t give him any actual jail time.

But Dr. Watts himself tells the story here, so I won’t rehash it. I just want to point out that if this happened to one man, it’s happening to many, and something needs to be done about it.

Like what? I agree, it’s an awful thing that happened to him, and I’m sure it’s happened to other we never hear about, but other than writing a letter my congresspeople will ignore, what do you suggest we do?

My goodness, how pessimistic! The easiest way to ensure defeat is to give up. I refuse to do that.

The truth is, if enough folks write to the people who purport to represent them, the issue does get noticed, if only because said purported representatives begin to worry about whether or not they’ll be reelected.

I write to mine at least a handful of times a month about a variety of issues. They’ve heard from me on this one, I promise you.

“All that is required for evil to flourish is for men of good character to do nothing.” If you make yourself enough of a presence, they actually DO start to listen. Thanks to my museum advocacy work, the Mayor of Salem knows who I am now. I find this both gratifying and slightly disturbing.

I wish I had your faith, either of you. Must be comforting.
